College of Science Teaching Forum

Improving student learning from research experiences in undergraduate courses

12.30-1.30, Thurs 11th April, Colleges of Science Seminar Room 2 (top floor of the Science Teaching Building #136)

Susan Howitt and Denise Higgins

What do your students think research is?  What students learn from research experiences and research led education often depends on what they think the experience is about.  To help them gain the most from such experiences, it is important to both understand what they think and help them see research in the context of your discipline.  In this workshop, we will share our experiences with tracking student learning in research projects through the use of learning logbooks to help make their thinking explicit.  This research is supported by a grant from the Office of Learning and Teaching, TREASURE (Teaching Research: Evaluation and Assessment Strategies for Undergraduate Research Experiences).  We will present our findings so far and seek your input into understanding student needs and background for research in different disciplines.

A light lunch will be provided.  Please RSVP to treasure@anu.edu.au  by COB Tue 9th April for catering purposes.
