CMBE & CPMS Teaching and Learning Colloquium

The open classroom - A research-led education samplerTuesday 4 June 2013 9am - 1pm, refreshments provided
Science Teaching building (#136) 3rd floor, Linnaeus Way, ANU

Visiting keynote speakers
Professor Suzi Vaughan DVC (Learning & Teaching), Queensland University of Technology
  • Mrs Lyn Alderman Manager, (Curriculum Revision & Improvement), Queensland University of Technology
  • Ms Le Hoa Phan Learning & Teaching Developer (Course Quality), Queensland University of Technology
  • Reframe: QUT’s Evaluation Framework
QUT is embedding a multidimensional evaluation framework to further strengthen learning and teaching and to provide staff with more useful tools and data to help them transform their students’ learning outcomes and experiences. Reframe: QUT’s Evaluation Framework was developed through a three-year, user-led, stakeholder approach to widespread organisational change designed to meet stakeholders’ needs. This evaluation approach was developed through collaborative efforts led by QUT’s Learning and Teaching Unit, with relevant reporting and technology departments, user-led stakeholder engagement and contributions by students, staff, line managers, institution executive and external groups. The evidence based evolution of the Evaluation Framework included: analysis of scholarly literature and environmental scans across the higher education sector (Alderman, et al., 2012); researched development of the conceptual theory (Alderman, et al., in press 2013); the incorporation of the stakeholder voice, and the framing within project management principles (Alderman & Melanie, 2012). This presentation offers insights and experiences from Reframe and will focus on the project, evaluation pilots and implications and interpretations for consideration by Science at ANU.

CHELT seminars: facilitation / threshold concepts

Seminar - May 10 - The European system of higher education after the Bologna reform: Dreams and realities

May 16 – 1-3 pm - Facilitating inquiry in undergraduate programs

Facilitation skills are central to fostering student inquiry. Research suggests that underpinning effective facilitation is an alignment between philosophical beliefs about learning and teaching and classroom practice. In this Academic Professional Development module, participants will use the Teaching Perspective Inventory to examine how they conceptualise teaching and learning and how their beliefs about teaching and learning translate into classroom practice. Participants will consider specific strategies in facilitation, in light of their own beliefs and intentions, and the possible effects these can have on student inquiry. (Facilitator: Glen O’Grady)

June 5 - Threshold Concepts: What are they and how might they help us in teaching and learning?

Seminar only 12-1pm               Seminar and APD Module 12-2 pm

In this seminar and Academic Professional Development module, Professor Erik Meyer will introduce and update the theory and use of Threshold Concepts (TCs)—those concepts considered central to the mastery of a subject. The notion of TCs provides a relatively new but dynamic approach to understanding education and learning which emerged from the UK national research project Enhancing Teaching-Learning Environments in Undergraduate Education.
Erik Meyer is currently Professor of Education in Teaching and Learning in the Engineering (EAIT) Faculty at the University of Queensland, and was a key member of the UK research team. With Ray Land, Erik published the seminal work on TCs. Since 2003, TCs have been embraced across many disciplines as a way to understand and unpack discipline knowledge, and develop and streamline curriculum to meet the needs of the discipline without overloading students. Erik has continued to research and publish on the topic of TCs, which have become the focus of biennial conferences attracting participants from around the world.
The APD module will include a post-seminar workshop in which participants will consider which TCs may be relevant in their discipline, and ways of both teaching these and assessing mastery.

    CHELT event

Friday May 10 - 12:30-1:30 pm CHELT Seminar Room

The European system of higher education after the Bologna reform: Dreams and realities

Professor Hans Heinimann, ETH Zurich University (Visiting Fellow, CHELT)

In 1999, the education ministers of 29 European countries signed the so-called Bologna Declaration, aiming to harmonise and improve the higher educational system. The declaration defined a force field with three major agents: (1) a standard 3-level model (3 year Bachelor, 2 year Master, 3 year Doctorate); (2) the European credit transfer system (ECTS), and (3) the promotion of an outcome-oriented approach to teaching and learning. Almost 15 years later, the higher educational system has changed considerably. This seminar will illustrate Europe’s approach to vocational and academic education, discuss some unintended developments of the Bologna Declaration, and suggest some possible future developments.

    College of Science Teaching Forum

Improving student learning from research experiences in undergraduate courses

12.30-1.30, Thurs 11th April, Colleges of Science Seminar Room 2 (top floor of the Science Teaching Building #136)

    Susan Howitt and Denise Higgins

What do your students think research is?  What students learn from research experiences and research led education often depends on what they think the experience is about.  To help them gain the most from such experiences, it is important to both understand what they think and help them see research in the context of your discipline.  In this workshop, we will share our experiences with tracking student learning in research projects through the use of learning logbooks to help make their thinking explicit.  This research is supported by a grant from the Office of Learning and Teaching, TREASURE (Teaching Research: Evaluation and Assessment Strategies for Undergraduate Research Experiences).  We will present our findings so far and seek your input into understanding student needs and background for research in different disciplines.

A light lunch will be provided.  Please RSVP to treasure@anu.edu.au  by COB Tue 9th April for catering purposes.

CHELT Seminar: Scalable learning: the beautiful paradox of massive open online courses (MOOCs)

Friday April 12 - Scalable learning: the beautiful paradox of massive open online courses (MOOCs)

    1:00-2.30 pm
ANU has become the only Australian member of edX.org, the online learning enterprise founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the aim of providing free education to one billion people worldwide within 10 years.
In this seminar, we will hear from the two pairs of academics behind the first ANUx courses:  Professor Brian Schmidt and Dr Paul Francis, who will be teaching Astrophysics; and Dr McComas Taylor and Dr Peter Friedlander, teaching a MOOC entitled Engaging India.
We will also hear from Dr Lyndsay Agans, Convenor of the CAP Digital Learning Project, who will discuss some of the organisational thinking and approach behind the development of Engaging India. Lyndsay will open a dialogue on the 'paradox' of distance learning and mass scale as one that actually allows for a more personalised design of education for individual needs, and in particular, the implications of  evolving educational theory of teaching in an open and massive online environment.
Please come and share this thoughtful and critical conversation about the evolving role of technology in higher education and, in turn, the changing place of higher education in the society in which it functions.
Register here   (Venue will be advised to registrants once we have an idea of numbers.)

Teaching Forum: Peer-Assisted Learning and the PAL Community of Practice

When:  12 to 1:30pm, Friday 22 March 2013 (a light lunch is provided following the forum)
Where: Forestry Building (#48) Rm. 108, Fenner School of Society and Environment
Abstract: Peer--‐assisted learning (PAL) can be broadly defined as an organised activity where students are encouraged to work together to develop their understanding rather than learn new content from an expert. Such learning often occurs without encouragement, but structured PAL programs seek to structure this process with a trained facilitator that assists in facilitating discussions. This year, with the support of the Centre for Higher Education Teaching and Learning, a PAL ‘Community of Practice’ (CoP) has been formed, bringing together individuals interested in PAL programs, as well as existing PAL--‐based educational groups, to enhance PAL practices at the ANU. The CoP hopes to achieve this through increased information--‐sharing between groups and collaboration on projects relevant to CoP members. The PAL CoP Teaching Forum has been scheduled to further promote PAL practices and start a dialogue within ANU about how PAL can work with other educational programs in order to enhance the student experience. Following an introduction to PAL, there will be workshops discussing three key aspects of peer--‐assisted learning: (1) How peer--‐assisted learning programs fit into existing courses (2) Evaluation of programs (3) Mentor selection and ongoing support. A variety of approaches addressing the above three issues will be presented; all attendees are also encouraged to contribute to the discussion.
