Thursday May 2 - Introduction to problem-based learning (PBL)

This Academic Professional Development module will be a demonstration of a PBL tutorial where workshop participants will experience first hand the processes used in PBL. Following the PBL experience participants will engage in a discussion about the utility of these processes in a higher education context drawing upon some of the research that has examined the effectiveness and challenges of PBL in University programs. Participants will be introduced to resources that could be useful in starting their own PBL activities. Facilitator: Glen O’Grady
Friday May 10 - The European system of higher education after the Bologna reform: Dreams and realities

In 1999, the education ministers of 29 European countries signed the so-called Bologna Declaration, aiming to harmonise and improve the higher educational system. The declaration defined a force field with three major agents: (1) a standard 3-level model (3 years bachelor, 2 years master, 3 years doctorate); (2) the European credit transfer system (ECTS), and (3) the promotion of an outcome-oriented approach to teaching and learning.
