(Tomorrow) May 29: 3.30-5.00 pm Learning: Do emotions matter in teaching and learning
In recent decades, it has been common to apply a scientific approach to teaching and learning, with a view to identifying the ‘best’ instructional procedures and techniques through an objective process. However, the most recent research in neuroscience suggests that human behaviour, and therefore learning, is governed by both cognitive and affective (emotional) processes. Research on emotions has incubated a new stream of research into what is known as ‘affective learning’, coming mainly from MIT's media lab. This Academic Development Module, led by CHELT Visiting Fellow Professor Hans Heinimann (ETH Zurich) and Dr Beth Beckmann (CHELT), considers the role of emotions in human learning and explores the implications for current, and especially future, approaches to teaching and learning.
