HERDSA Newsletter

ACT HERDSA Branch Newsletter
Dear HERDSA ACT Branch member
The new ACT branch steering committee is keen to include as many members as possible in events of our small yet active HERDSA Branch.  We have several events planned and are receptive to suggestions for further events or other networking opportunities.
This year we are fortunate to have access to some resources generated as part of the Office of Learning and Teaching funded HERDSA dissemination project to share finding of the national review of the last five years to identify the main areas that have been explored and the key outcomes that have been generated across Australia’s academic community, review available at: http://www.herdsa.org.au/wp-content/uploads/HERDSA_Project_Final.pdf.  We are particularly keen to hear from members who would like to be involved in the dissemination project.
We look forward to meeting you at HERDSA events, in the meantime please contact a member of the committee with ideas, suggestions or any queries relating to your involvement with HERDSA.
Jean Rath, UC (Branch Convener), Beth Beckmann, ANU, Catherine McLoughlin, ACU and Eleanor Hancock, UNSW Canberra.

2.       HERDSA CONFERENCE AND TATL

HERDSA runs a TATAL (Talking about Teaching and learning) at the annual conference each year where delegates have the opportunity to complete 7 hours of workshopping in a collaborative reflective practice environment to produce a draft of their Teaching philosophy statement. The program of four sessions starts with a preconference workshop on Monday 1st July 2013. Time: 9.00-12.00pm
Please register for the workshop when you register for the conference. As this is at the heart of HERDSA’s work there is no charge.
It is facilitated by HERDSA members from Australia and New Zealand
More information on TATAL: TATAL workshops seek to develop cohorts of reflective practitioners who meet regularly to enhance their teaching and the learning of their students and to develop their own teaching philosophy statement. HERDSA TATAL Auckland will start with a pre-conference workshop. It will continue with a session each day of the conference for delegates who participated in the preconference session.  For more information on this program please contact Robert.Kennelly@canberra.edu.au

3.       OTHER EVENTS IN THE ACT REGION:

Improving student learning from undergraduate research experiences
TLC Workshop

12.00 to 1.30, Fri 17 May, Teaching & Learning Commons, Commons Spaces Room 1C42, University  of Canberra, see map http://www.canberra.edu.au/maps

Presented by Susan Howitt and Denise Higgins from OLT-funded project TREASURE (ANU, UC and UWS)
What do your students think research is?  What students learn from research experiences and research led education often depends on what they think the experience is about.  To help them gain the most from such experiences, it is important to both understand what they think and help them see research in the context of your discipline.  In this workshop, we will share our experiences with tracking student learning in research projects through the use of learning logbooks to help make their thinking explicit.  This research is supported by a grant from the Office of Learning and Teaching: TREASURE (Teaching Research: Evaluation and Assessment Strategies for Undergraduate Research Experiences).  We will present our findings so far and seek your input into understanding student needs and background for research in different disciplines.
A light lunch will be provided from 12.00pm, and workshop begins 12.30.  Please RSVP to treasure@anu.edu.au  by COB Tue 14th May for catering purposes.
